Capital of Kyrgyzstan - Bishkek

Bishkek Bishkek (formerly Frunze) is the capital and industrial centre of Kyrgyzstan, and the only town in the world named after a wooden plunger - a bishkek is a churn used to make fermented mare's milk. It's a relaxed city of wide streets and handsome houses.
Bishkek is located where the Kazakh steppe meets the foothills of the majestic Tien-Shan Mountain range, set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and mountain lakes. Founded in 1878, it is a relatively modern city, largely Soviet built with wide avenues and numerous parks.
Bishkek is an excellent starting point for the Tian Shan mountains and Lake Issyk-Kul, and for the overland crossing into China via the Torugart Pass. The 4800m (15,744ft) permanently snowcapped ramparts of the Kyrgyz Alatau range loom over the city.
Bishkek lies on a latitude 42°50" north — similar to that of Istanbul, Madrid and New York — longitude of 74°35" east — similar to that of New Delhi and at an altitude of 750m. The area covered by Bishkek is about 124 square kilometres, but you can walk around the city centre where most of the important sights are very easily.
There are two rivers flowing through the city — Alamedin, Ala-Archa — both tributaries of the River Chu. Also, the Grand Chu Canal flows through the city. Bishkek is said to be the greenest in Central Asia with more trees per head of population than any other.
Ala Archa Canyon Within an hour's drive of Bishkek is the Ala-Archa Canyon, part of the Ala Archa National Park. This area of outstanding natural beauty is ideal for trekking and winter skiing. The Burana Tower is an 11th century minaret, well worth visiting.
Ala-Archa is a well-known place with the citizens of Bishkek, who like to take walks amid unspoilt nature, relax by a waterfall and enjoy a picnic in the summer or visit climbers’ graveyard. Experienced hikers can climb up to the Ak-Sai Canyon and Ak-Sai Glacier surrounded by region’s highest peaks. Ala-Archa is normally overcrowded on weekends and holidays.
